Gordon Bennett Historic Motor Route

The Gordon Bennett historic Motoring Route – One of the World’s Greatest Sporting Events
The Historic Gordon Bennett Motoring Route runs through the spectacular Irish Countryside and into the picturesque towns and villages of counties Laois, Kildare and Carlow. The famous Gordon Bennett Route was raced by the World’s greatest daredevils in 1903. Today, you can drive the historic route at your own pace and enjoy many of Ireland’s best-loved visitor attractions and breathtaking scenery along the way. An annual Classic Car Rally takes place on the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Signposted Route
Identifiable road signs make the Gordon Bennett Route an easy to follow tour through one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland offering a unique insight into the lives, atmosphere and sheer adrenalin behind the historic car race that roared across this 166km (104 mile) route.
Plenty to See & Do
There is plenty to see and the Gordon Bennett Route for all the family, for motoring enthusiasts and for motor club members alike. The guide that accompanies the route brings you specialist reports, fun facts and in-depth analysis of one of the world’s greatest sporting events ever.
Who was involved:
This historical route was signposted in 2005 / 2006 and an accompanying guide was published ‘Drive the Historic Gordon Bennett Route’. This co-operative project was headed by the Tourism Officer of Laois County Council, Carlow Tourism Officer and Kildare Failte Tourism Officer as well as the Gordon Bennett Committee and county car clubs. This project was well supported by Laois, Carlow and Kildare County Councils and Laois, Carlow and Kildare LEADER bodies.
