Play by Laois Youth Theatre

Chatroom PosterPress Release

Plays by Laois Youth Theatre in the Dunamaise Arts Centre

The Laois Youth Theatre, which is run by the Laois Arts Office, Laois County Council is delighted to present an afternoon of theatre at 3pm on Saturday 12th April in the Dunamaise Arts Centre.

Stradbally Youth Theatre presents “Chat Room”

Come join Stradbally Youth Theatre in Chatroom where a group of bored teenagers are hanging out idly chatting online about JK Rowling, Willie Wonka, Britney Spears and...suicide. Jim is depressed and talks of ending his life.  Struggling between their desire to be accepted and their conscience, some do their best to help Jim, while others seize upon the opportunity to relieve their boredom and make him their newfound cause.

Enda Walsh's compelling play deals with cyberbullying and suicide.  The phenomenon of intolerance and hate speech online (flaming) is explored.  It considers how our online interactions can some times be at odds with our face to face encounters, how the sense of freedom that comes from being faceless can be exhilarating and can make you more daring and bring you to darker places than in your everyday interactions with people.

We witness how, with alarming ease, alter egos / avatars can take over, subverting our perceptions of identity so that we can never truly trust who we are chatting to online.  “ these rooms, words are power and you and that bitch have all the right words...” . “Chatroom” is directed by Stradbally Youth Theatre Co-ordinator, Siobhan Coffey.

Portlaoise Youth Theatre presents Patrick Marber's The Musicians.  The orchestra of Ridley Road, a state school, is to give a concert in Moscow at the European Festival of Youth, playing Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony before an audience of cultural bigwigs. But their instruments have been impounded by Customs. Luckily, Alex, the Russian boy who cleans the hall, comes up with a plan that saves everyone. The Musicians uses a large cast full of energy to deliver fun and laughter.  “The Musicians”, is co-ordinated by Portlaoise Youth Theatre Co-ordinator, Ken Miller.

Performances begin  at 3pm on Saturday 12th April.  Tickets 8euro/5euro available from the box office of Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise 057 8663355 or online at
