Portlaoise Town Council

Portlaoise Town Council like all Town Councils, have their origin in the 1800’s, obtaining most of their statutory powers under the Town Improvement (Ireland) Act 1854.
As a democratically elected Town Authority, Portlaoise Town Council see their role as primarily to provide civic leadership and a focus for the town and its citizens. Portlaoise is the largest town in Laois and it has a population of 14,275 (Census 2006).
Portlaoise is twinned with Coulounieix-Chamiers, a suburb of Perigeux in the Dordogne area near Bordeaux and located in the South-West of France. The official twinning ceremony took place on 28th April, 1996.
