Information & Communication Technology Department
The Information and Communication Technology Department of Laois County Council has a staff of 13 and is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of all the systems that fall under the general heading of I.C.S. The staff also provide support services to the other departments and to the elected members.
Functions of the IS Department
The I.S. Department provides many functions for the Council the main items are listed below.
- Provide a stable secure communications network for the organisation including items such as email, firewall and virus protection.
- Central purchasing of I.S. equipment including PC’s, Printers and Scanners.
- Support and maintenance of all peripheal devices i.e pc's, printers, cameras, scanners etc, through our IT Helpdesk.
- Provision of online services such as payment of litter or parking fines, updating of keyfob for landfill or planning enquiries.
- Development and maintenance of our website www.laois.ie
- Management of all databases and systems throughout the organisation.
- Assist the Council in all its services via technology i.e settting up presentaions etc.
- Support and maintenance on all software applications within the organisation via our Helpdesk service.
- Development and customisation of software for the council's needs.
- Research, advise and consult on all projects with an I.S. element.
- Represent the Council on national I.S. projects.
- Development of GIS strategy and its subsequent promotion.
- GIS software and systems implementation.
- Geographic data preparation, processing, updating and quality control.
- Digital and hard copy map production for departmental projects.
- Provision of Council Spacial data sets for analysis in GIS.
- Maintain external data including OSI mapping and orthophotography, Duchas data etc.
- Promotion of broadband throughout the county.
- Management and maintenance of both mobile and fixed line communications.
