Tenant Purchase Scheme

If you are a tenant of more than one year you may apply to purchase your house under the Council’s Tenant Purchase Scheme.  A person shall be regarded as having held a tenancy for a year if:

a) The combined period of his/her tenancy and of the preceding tenancy (if any) held by a spouse is not less than one year, or

b)  a person must be included on the rent assessment for a period of at least 12 months immediately prior to being considered for a tenancy and must be considered in need of housing.

2011 Tenant Purchase Scheme for Long Standing Tenants
If you have been a tenant of the Local Authority for over ten years, the 2011 Tenant Purchase Scheme gives you the opportunity to purchase your house at a reduced price.  If eligible, you will receive a 3% discount for every year (maximum 15 years) that you have been a tenant of the Local Authority - the maximum discount that you could be eligible for is 45%.

Please note that applications under this scheme must be made by 31/12/2011, no applications will be accepted after this date.  Sales must be completed by 31/12/2012 as the scheme will expire on that date.

How does the Scheme Work? Interested applicants should complete the Tenant Purchase Application form and return same to the Housing Department.  On receipt of completed application form, the Council will arrange for a valuation of the house with the Council’s appointed Valuer. The price of the house will be its market value, as determined by the Council, in its existing state of repair and condition, less discounts. 

What discounts are Available? For every year of tenancy, you will be allowed 3% of the value of the house – up to a maximum of 10 years (30%) plus a special discount of €3,810.

So for example, if the value of the house is €120,000 and with 10 years tenancy, you will be entitled to 30% discount which works out at €36,000 plus special discount of €3,810 the purchase price of the house would be €80,190.
