Biodiversity Week


International Biodiversity Day is 22nd May each year.

 

In 2022, Ireland’s Biodiversity Week took place 13th to 22nd May. Biodiversity Week events for Laois in 2022 included:

Swift Walk and Talk, Stradbally
Tuesday May 17th at 7pm

Ricky Whelan of BirdWatch Ireland gave a talk on Swifts in Laois and plans to conserve these threatened urban birds In Stradbally and across Co Laois. A partnership event between Laois Heritage Office and BirdWatch Ireland supported by the Heritage Council.

Wildlife in Buildings Talk
Wednesday May 18th at 8pm, online

A free webinar for Biodiversity Week with John Lusby of BirdWatch Ireland, focusing on the diverse range of wildlife which have taken up residence in our buildings and how we can appreciate and protect them. Hosted by the Heritage Offices of Laois, Tipperary, Clare and Donegal County Councils and the Biodiversity Office of Kerry County Council, in partnership with BirdWatch Ireland.

Nature is Good for you – All week!
In celebration of Biodiversity Week a huge range of free resources were promoted by Laois Heritage Office, including books on Wildlife in Buildings and Gardening for Biodiversity, Nature worksheets for kids, a guide to birdsong for young people (see below) and information on nest boxes for birds and bats.
