1) Give examples of works that qualify for a Disabled Persons Grant?

Grant assistance available for works deemed essential by Occupational Therapist to meet the needs of the disabled person, e.g.. Provision of ground floor bed/bathroom accommodation; stairlift; ramped access etc.

2) Will Laois County Council arrange for a contractor to carry out the required works under a Disabled Persons Grant?

No. You must engage your own contractor/architect. It is advisable to get estimates from two or three contractors. Contractors engaging in works for which grants are payable must have a current Tax Clearance or a C2 Certificate. If, however you are a tenant of Laois County Council, the work will then be undertaken by the Council.

Only works recommended by Occupational Therapist will be considered for funding.

4) When will I get the Disabled Persons Grant?

You must make formal application for the grant (see application form and explanatory memorandum). If approved, you will be issued with a letter detailing exact nature of works being approved. When these works have been completed to the satisfaction of Laois County Council, the grant will be paid.

5) Can I apply for a second Disabled Person's Grant?

Yes, but only in special circumstances and at the discretion of Laois County Council and with the consent of the Department of the Environment. Total for both Grants cannot exceed €20,320.

6) How much of a Disabled Person Grant can I get?

You are entitled to 90% of Laois County Council's estimated cost of works subject to a maximum grant of €20,320. The applicant must pay balance of monies due to contractor/s.

7) Can I apply for an Essential Repair Grant for Elderly and/or Disabled Persons Grant if work has already commenced/been carried out?

Laois County Council must be notified before any works commence. At all times, every assistance will be given to enable qualified applicants to avail of grants.
