Roads GIS

Within Laois County Council’s Road Section both AutoCAD and MapInfo are used considerably.  In most cases the technicians and engineers use the primary software and do not use any job-specific front-end applications.  The only exception to this is MapRoad, which is presently used by a limited number of GIS technicians.MAPROAD is a modular roads information management GIS, with a core "Road Network" module displaying the road network.

Additional modules such as "Road Accident" and "Road Management" run in parallel with the road network module

  • Road Network: A IS module displaying the road network and the descriptive data associated with each road in a Local Authority. The module can produce the "Road Schedule" and various plots of the road network, thematically coloured according to its properties
  • Road Accident: A module that displays accidents against the road network and allows recording and analysis of all accident data
  • Road Bridge Module: displays locations of bridges and associated data
  • Road Traffic Module: enables management of road traffic counts count stations and AADT calculations
  • Road Route Module: maps route e.g. forestry, salting to roads and records associated data
  • Hazards Module: displays hazard against the road network and allow recording, analysis and reporting of hazard data
