Household Charge

*The Household Charge is an annual charge introduced by the Local Government (Household Charge) Act 2011 / Local
Government (Household charge) Regulations 2012
which is payable by owners of residential property.

*People are bound by the laws passed by the Oireachtas and cannot avoid those laws by 'withdrawing consent' to them.

*People should be aware there is an accumulating fine for late payment of the charge after the 31st March 2012:

10% will be added for payments less than six months late, 20% after 6 months and 30% after a year.

On top of that late payment interest also applies on the amount outstanding in respect of unpaid household charge and is calculated at the rate of one per cent per month or part of a month from the due date, until payment of the household charge has been made.

*The final date for direct debits to be set up on the website www.householdcharge.ie is 29th  February.
