Polling Scheme 2008
A new Scheme of Polling Districts and Polling Places for County Laois, prepared in accordance with the Electoral (Polling Schemes) Regulations 2005, was adopted by the Members of Laois County Council at their meeting held on 20th October, 2008. The date of commencement of the Polling Scheme is 21st October, 2008.
The main changes to the Polling scheme are summarised as follows:
Graigue Urban Polling District
The Polling Place for the Polling District of Graigue Urban is Graiguecullen.
Graigue Rural Polling District
The Graigue Rural Polling District is divided into 2 Polling Districts – Graigue Rural and a new Polling District of Rossmore.
The Polling District of Graigue Rural comprises the Electoral Division of Graigue Rural and the Polling Place is Graiguecullen.
The new Polling District of Rossmore comprises the Electoral Divisions of Ballickmoyler (Part of) and Rossmore. To facilitate this, the townland of Springhill was moved from the Electoral Division of Graigue Rural to the Electoral Division of Rossmore. The Polling Place for the new Polling District of Rossmore is Killeshin.
Shaen Electoral Division
A new Polling District of Shaen is created, which comprises part of the Electoral Division of Shaen (Townlands of Ballintaggart, Brittas, Cottagefarm, Killeen, Kilmainham, Kilnacash, Knightstown, Lauragh, Shaen). The Polling Place is Kilmainham.
The remaining townlands in the Shaen Electoral Division (Ballydavis, Derrygarran, Eyne, Straboe) remain in the Portlaoise Rural Polling District.
Electoral Area Boundary Committee
The Electoral Area Boundary Committee Report, published on 16th June, 2008, recommended that the following alterations be made in relation to County Laois. These recommendations were signed into legislation in the County of Laois Local Electoral Areas Order 2008 and have been incorporated into the Polling Scheme.
(1) The Electoral Divisions of Arderrin, Brisha, Cardtown and Lacka will be transferred from the Borris-in-Ossory Electoral Area to the Mountmellick Electoral Area.
To facilitate the transfer of these electoral Divisions, a new Polling District of Lacka is created in the Mountmellick Electoral Area, comprising the Electoral Divisions of Arderrin, Brisha, Cardtown and Lacka. The Polling Place for the the Polling District of Lacka is Paddock.
The townlands of Clash, Clonincurragh, Derrycanton and Glenbower, in the Electoral Division of Clonin, are transferred from the Brisha Polling District to the Marymount Polling District. All of the townlands in the Electoral Division of Clonin are now in the Polling District of Marymount and this facilitates the transfer of the Electoral Divisions of Arderrin, Brisha, Cardtown and Lacka into the Mountmellick Electoral Area.
(2) The Electoral Division of Timogue is transferred from the Emo Electoral Area to the Luggacurren Electoral Area.
To facilitate this transfer, the Electoral Division of Timogue is transferred into the Polling District of Timahoe in the Luggacurren Electoral Area. The Polling Place for the Polling District of Timahoe is Timahoe.
