Strategic Policy Committees
The Local Government Act, 2001 provided for the establishment of Strategic Policy Committees. The thinking behind this was that an opportunity would be afforded to the elected Members of the Council to work in partnership with representatives of groups that would have an interest in specific policy areas. The representatives of the groups are often referred to as the Sectoral Representatives. They are selected in accordance with a Strategic Policy Scheme.
In Laois there are 4 Strategic Policy Committees that deal with policy matters relating to various areas of activity:
- Transportation and Water Services
- Planning & Development and Environment
- Housing & Social Policy
- Community and Economic Development, Culture and Heritage
The Strategic Policy Committee Scheme 2009 - 2014 is a very informative document that will answer the vast majority of frequently asked questions relating to Strategic Policy Committees.
