Browsealoud
Browsealoud is software that speech enables our website content. It can assist in the navigation of our site for the following sections of the population:
- Low literacy and reading skills
- Where English is not the first language
- Dyslexic Community
- Mild visual impairment
How Does it Work
Browsealoud reads aloud whatever text on the page you point to with your mouse. The text is read in sentences rather than word by word so it sounds natural and easy to follow. Of course you must have either speakers or headphones attached to your PC in order to hear it!
How do I Get It
All you have to do is click on the link below and follow the instructions for downloading the programme to your PC. When you are asked if you want to open the programme or save it, it's easier to choose 'open' if you're not too familiar with downloading.
Once Browsealoud is downloaded to your PC, you will be able to use it to read our website. You will notice that your cursor arrow will turn bright yellow and the text that is being read will be highlighted. You will also see a Browsealoud icon in the toolbar in the bottom right corner of your computer.
You can choose your own settings in Browesaloud. You may prefer a mans voice to a womans for example, or American English to British English. You can change them at any time by clicking on the icon at the bottom of your page. Whatever settings you choose, we hope that Browsealoud will reduce any difficulty you may have with reading the Laois County Council website.
More information is available from the Browsealoud website.
