"Drive for Life" Programme

What is it?

Laois County Council is involved in promoting the ‘Drive for Life’ Programme, which is a one-day course offered to transition/ fourth year students. It aims to raise awareness of road safety and mould attitudes of young drivers-to-be before they actually start to drive.  The Programme is aimed at preventing young people becoming involved in road traffic incidents that all too often result in serious injury or death.

The first part shows very graphically, using visual and audio media, what can happen when a vehicle is in the hands of an irresponsible driver.

Using video, DVD and PowerPoint the following topics are covered:

  • The consequences of dangerous driving.
  • Adopting the correct attitude.
  • Speed Kills!
  • Anticipation and hazard awareness.
  • Vulnerable road users.
  • Seat belts.
  • Mobile phones and driving.
  • Practical advice on learning to drive and insurance.

Parts of the programme are interactive and the students are encouraged to participate as much as possible. In the final session we have the group do the complete theory test. Also every participant is given a folder with practical advice on the driving test and the rules of the road etc.

The cost of the full days presentation is €395 of which €200 is subsidised by Laois County Council.

For further information on this course, you can contact our Road Safety Officer, Ms Yvonne O'Reilly at (057) 8664022
