The Loops

With an outstanding diversity of scenery, the country has a top range of looped walks including coastal, island, mountain and hill, bog and moorlands, historical and archaeological one-day circuits suitable for both serious and leisurely walkers. Ranging from 5km to 16km, these walks focus on areas of outstanding natural beauty and historical significance. The loops use a variety of colours to denote the level of difficulty as follows:

  • Green - easy, short (1-2hrs), suitable for all levels of fitness;
  • Blue - moderate difficulty, 2-3hrs duration, suitable for medium levels of fitness;
  • Red – hard, 3-5hrs duration, suited to walkers with higher than average levels of fitness.

Kinnitty Castle Trailheads

Directions to trailhead: From Kinnitty Village, take the R421 following the signposts for Mountmellick. After 200m veer right on to the R440 (signposted Mountrath).Continue along this road for 3km until you reach the entrance to Kinnitty Forest.

Lough Boora (Birdhide Carpark) Trailheads

Directions to trailhead:
From the town of Kilcormac (on the A52 between Tullamore and Birr) take the N52 following the signposts for Tullamore. As you leave the town turn left after crossing the bridge over the Siber river. Follow the riverside roadway for 300m to reach a T-junction where you turn right. After 6km the trailhead is on your left opposite a wooden bridge.

Directions to trailhead: In the village of Cadamstown (on the R421 betweeen Clonaslee & Kinnitty) the car park is located beside Dempsey's public house.

Clonaslee (Brittas Woods  Entrance) Trailhead

Directions to trailhead: From the bridge over the Clodiagh River is the village of Clonaslee (on the R422) follow the signsporst for Glenkeen. The forest entrance is on your left after 200m.
