Update on Heritage Photography Competition

The Built Heritage Photography Competition attracted a great response, with over 150 high quality entrants. Entries have now been judged, and an awards evening and exhibtion of highly commended entries will be held during Heritage Week. A selection of prizewinners will also be featured on this website after the exhibition.

The awards ceremony will be held in County hall, Portlaoise, starting at 8pm on Tuesday the 26th of August and anyone interested is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

Background information on the competition is below.

What does heritage mean to you?

Heritage is everything we value from our past, which we want to pass on to future generations. Built heritage can be interpreted as “anything built or created by humans”, including castles, large country houses, bridges, mills, railways, thatched cottages, farmyards, windows and doors, village pumps, carvings, streetscapes, archaeological features, ruins, field boundaries…. The list is endless!

For this exciting new competition, we are looking for striking, original or unusual photographs of any aspect of the built heritage of County Laois, in its broadest sense. Suitable themes include images which explore, interpret or help to convey the value and importance of our architectural heritage, emphasising “everyday heritage”. Photographs that show a personal interpretation of heritage are particularly welcome, and the story telling quality of the image will be as important as the pictorial quality.

The judging criteria will include:

  • Originality & Creativity
  • Demonstration of understanding or a new angle on our built heritage
  • Photographic content and composition

The closing date is October 16th. Winners will be selected by a panel comprising members of photographic societies in Laois and built heritage experts.
