Backyard Burning
Buring of household waste either in an open fire or in a backyard barrel is not the solution to reducing your waste. This is because burning happens at low, uncontrolled temperatures which is very damaging to your health, the environment and causes nuisance to your neighbours. Almost 73% of dioxins emitted to the aire in Ireland come from uncontrolled, low temperature burning of waste. This makes backyard burning of waste the single biggest source of dioxins released into the Irish environment.
The burning of waste in your backyard is an illegal activity under the Wate Management (Prohibition of Waste Disposal by Burning) Regulations 2009. It is an offence to dispose of waste within the curtilage of a building and the backyard.
