Community Clean Up - October 2011
Every year, Laois County Council’s dedicated “Clean up Laois Week” in conjunction with National Spring Clean month gets bigger and better. To continue on from this years’ success; the Environment Section of Laois County Council is undertaking a second “Community Clean Up” from 10-14 October.
The campaign was launched at the Civic Plaza, Aras An Chontae on Monday, 26th September at 11am. The aim of this initiative is to encourage communities to work together for the betterment of the environment and, at the launch, groups gathered to show their support with their local authority namely children from St. Pauls, Scoil Mhuire, Portlaoise Educate together and Scoil Bhride, dignitaries, local traders and Tidy Town members.
Director of Services, Mr. John Daly said “We rely on the wonderful and ongoing support from volunteers countywide. Their dedication and hard work is fundamental and forms the backbone of any community”. To endorse the event, it was fitting that the Chairperson of Laois Federation of Tidy Towns, Noreen Byrne, launched the campaign. Ms. Byrne added “that everyone has a duty to play in keeping their surrounds clean and litter free and she was particularly happy to see the school children present as the importance of educating children at a young age in litter control is vital.
Laois County Council encourages people from all walks of life to take pride in their local environment and to take action against litter. Register your Clean Up on or before 30th September 2011 with Laois County Council’s Environment Section on 057 86 74330 or sdonoher@laoiscoco.ie. Application forms can be downloaded from www.laois.ie
Clean up kits (bags, gloves and litter pickers) will be provided to pre-registered groups and these kits can be collected from Monday 3rd October 2011 from The Environment Section, Aras an Chontae, Portlaoise, Co. Laois. Supplies are limited and will be distributed on a first come first served basis. All resulting bags of hand-picked litter only (non-domestic/no bulky waste) will be collected as close as possible to the agreed date and at the location specified. Bags will then be disposed of to the landfill at no cost to your group. Any uncontaminated recyclables should be segregated in the specific bags provided.
Help us combat the litter problem! Remember it is your community…help make a difference!
