Young Citizen Awards

The Young Citizen Awards endorsed and presented by President Mary McAleese were launched as part of the 2005 European Year of Citizenship through Education. The scheme is aimed at young people who are involved in their local communities, through active citizen projects, such as environmental work, caring for people with special needs.

Organised in conjunction with Citizenship 2005, the Department of Education and Science and Development Co-operation Ireland it was supported by County and City Development Boards.

In November 2005 Laois County Development Board advertised the awards throughout County Laois. Nominations were received and a sub committee assessed the nominations received.

The following 11 students and students from the Portlaoise based Block Project were among the successful nominee’s who were presented with their certificates (signed by President McAleese) at an awards ceremony held in Aras an Chontae, on Monday April 3rd 2006.

Some of the projects undertaking by the students included,
Mental Health of Young People Today, Fair Trade, Drug & Alcohol Awareness,
Working with Older People, Sports Coaching and Healthy School Lunches.
