County Laois covers an area of 1,719 kilometres sq (or 171,990 hectares) which represents 2.4% of the Irish national land mass. The two principal rivers, the Nore and the Barrow, flow from north-west to south-east to drain almost the entire conty. The Grand Canal also flows through the north-east of the county.
